After a few years of seeing post-punk, semi-new-wave, shoe-gazing synth-fingering bands around the traps, after a few years of watching every second band want to be either Gang of Four or Joy Division, last night I saw something different.
No, it was not one of those bands where the lead singer thinks he’s that guy from The Clash (which is almost all of them).
Last night I saw a fabulous band called The Scare.
A furious, noisy ball of rock-n-roll that you should really see before they fall apart into drug and alcohol-fueled self-destruction.
Which is a good thing.
Bands that are on the path to demise are always great.
Finally, a lead singer with the cocky arrogant energy that says “I’m better than everyone in the room”, but in a way that the audience responds with energy that says “Yes you are, and we love it”.
The singer mixes a bit of Iggy Pop, and a lot of early Michael Hutchence into what’s a brilliantly delivered performance.
Yes, Hutchence. With the fringe, and the bent-over singing and everything. And the fringe-flicking. And the pashing of guys in the crowd. Ok, so Hutch didn’t do that, but jeepers it was a good gig.
Yes! Finally a band that puts on a performance!
The songs were awesome.
The band were great.
Just gangly enough, with a bit of dirt in the guitars.
Of course, the jeans were super-tight all ’round, and some sleeveless denim jackets to show off the toughy stickers..
Thank you Mel for the gift you gave me of The Scare.
Can’t wait to see their next gig!

Levity Party at Oxford Art Factory
It’s been a bit quiet here in blogland. Work has been relentless and the internet was cut off at home after the greedy corporate bastards at Telstra delivered a $3000 bill. After i was so nice as to be…
That is why you don’t use Telstra.
[...] In their place The Scare played who, like Cut Off Your Hands, have an unpredictable and wild stage show, with lead singer Kiss spending much of the set in the crowd getting in scrapes. Andrew G loved it. [...]
