What would interest me is a real statitisical breakdown of the Aussie swing vote. All the election hoo-hah directly targets this voter. It seems to be particularly ugly this time round. So my best advice to people is don’t listen to the media meatworks that is rife at the moment but look at your local candidates and find out what your local issues are. How do they affect you and your family and friends. Sometimes just keeping things at grass roots level is a good stepping stone. The reality check is who ever gets in will fail to some degree in their pre-election promises. Do some homework and it will pay off, this is real pre-election promise.

I couldn’t have put it in to better words Andrew. I am fed up with people who complain with what’s wrong with Australia but then turn around and say they don’t vote or they do their ballot paper wrong, so it doesn’t count. Their reason being it’s a big waste of time. That’s simply stupidity. I say you either put up or shut up!

Hi Nutty Professor, I think it’s great that 16 & 17 yr olds are discussing the election, but I would point out that your group of friends is probably the exception, rather than the rule! But that is true of the entire population as well. It’s estimated that only 5% of the popn actually understands how elections work, and the voting process also assumes that human beings are rational beings – that we can order candidates in the preferential system in a systematic, logical way! That IMHO is the failing of the system – it’s democratic (to a point), but doesn’t account for the humaness (is that even a word!?) of people.

My Friends and I are not of age to vote yet, however we as a group have chosen who we would vote for if given the chance.

One of my best friend, who shall remain nameless, thinks that the labour government should be in power and has most of the group on her side.
Another friend however is going for the liberal government and has a very strong opinion on this.

the election has caused various arguments within our friendship group at school and at retreat’s, which were ment for us to get away from all the hussle and bussle of the world. i guess that just show’s you if a bunch of sixteen/seventeen year olds can debate for hours on end why the party they are going for should win that we too should be able to vote. after all it is our future!

I wish that researching political party policy was the answer to a more informed vote, but I think it’s only part of it. The more I learn, the more I wish that we could fix the system! We don’t get to vote for the PM, we only get to vote for our seat, and in my case, it’s a very safe Liberal seat. I’m going to vote for a minor party, but know that it will be passed on full strength to one of the 2 majors…Doh! It’s rather sad that our two choices are Conservative or a Little Less Conservative. Anyway, I’ll vote on Nov 24…maybe my well-thought out preferences might at least shake the 2PP a little.

I remember the first time I went to vote with my parents. My dad came into the tiny cubicle with me to tell me what boxes to tick. At 18 I didn’t care much about politics or even understood it, even though not long before I had sat my HSC economics paper and had written a whole essay on ‘infaltion and unemployment’, which were sky high at the time. How things change as you get older and become more of a contributing factor to the ecomony and environment. I now read up on each governments’ policies and try make some sense of them all. At the end of the day, as long as whoevere is elected executes their policies in a way that is in the best interest for Australia, so that no one would never ever have to die for this country, would be a good result.

Oh, and ensure the rich do not get richer and the poor do not get poorer.

Totally agree Mr G. We are priviliged enough in this country to have the freedom to exercise our democratic right – so use it!! I take my kids along each time we vote, as my father did me, to help them have a sense of purpose – that voting is a good thing and we should do it to the best of our ability.
Bring on the 24th November……

I already voted, as i won’t be in my state in voting day.

I got someone who knows what was going on to sit and explain everything to me. Then decided which one was worse then the other. It is a total load of Ruddish.
