Up late…

There’s a lot to be said for staying up late…

You could surrender your brain to mediocrity and watch those ridiculous game shows on the telly (the end of the world is nigh),
or you you could take matters into your own hands, pour yourself a beverage, and play some Slayer really, really loud.

Ah, the benefits of living alone…

Enjoy.

Slayer are so great.

Something to believe in..

Can you tell I’m on a trip at the moment about bands that care, bands that put their arse on the line for their ideas, bands that stand up for something?

Check this out –

German, hardcore anti-fascist noise-lords ATARI TEENAGE RIOT play a gig on the back of a truck in the middle of, well, a riot.
It was a demonstration against NATO in Berlin in 1999 that turned ugly.

I don’t quite know if any band has had the chance to sing their songs of protest in a more relevant situation, ever.

It’s a little like the groom singing a love song to his new bride at their wedding, except with more tear gas.

It’s quite full on, there’s a fair bit of riot-style violence and the music’s soooo great.

If you were lucky enough to catch these guys at the Big Day Out a few years back, you’ll recognise some of the songs.

Hold on to your gas masks.

RJ DIO

I know I talk a lot about Dio, and here I go again (on my own).

He was the evil elf, he was the only man on earth capable of filling in for OZzy when he left Black Sabbath, and he went on to have one of the cheesiest (read: best) solo careers ever.

Here’s his video for Holy Diver.

He was 4 foot 8 or so, yet weilds a sword well, it’s the funniest D&D video ever and the song is a killer.
If you don’t get this, don’t worry – it will come with time.
It’s so exellent it’s just unreal.
Funny to think that for about five years or so, every singer wanted to look and sound like RJ Dio.

Dio, Holy Diver.
Try not to laugh too much, try and focus on the rock – he’s amazing!!

More Dangerous Bands

After yesterday’s post, I got to thinking about bands that aren’t afraid to say what they think.

SO many bands have always been pissweak corporate puppets, afraid to say what they really think.

Hardly anyone’s taking a stand for anything.
Well, there’s a few bands that whine a bit about girls that don’t love them, mates that left the band, friends that died in car crashes and mates that have topped themselves, and that’s fine.

I am talking about bands that will not accept the status quo, bands that are pissed off about the world, the government, and the rampant spread of redneck fuckwittery across the globe.

One such band was the Dead Kennedys.
I love the Dead Kennedys.

Seriously, how can anyone hear their music, their material, and not get fired up?
More to the point, how can anyone see what they did, hear what they did, and then have the nerve to call themselves punk??

I hear so much music at the moment that feels like the end of the world, well, the Dead Kennedys were the soundtrack to oblivion.

Much more than a cool-as-fuck logo, they were mad, really, really mad, and weren’t afraid to sing about it.

Check this out – California über Alles live from 1984.

See! Super Scary nerdy guitar players!
Hear! Lyrics of anger and sheer disdain!
Watch in Glee! As lead singer Jello Biafra punches the shit out of someone in the front row who grabs him!
GAsp! As Jello speaks about foriegn policies that still echo today!

Dig it..

The most dangerous band in the world.

WARNING: This post contains offensive material, offensive cultural references, extreme violent themes, excessive coarse language and other things that you should not read. Do not watch or view this if you are offended by these things.

Now that the Punisherz are unleashed on the music Industry, allow me to remind you what the most dangerous band in the world was.

They were N.W.A. (Ni**az With Attitude)

MC Ren, DJ Yella, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E.

They were so an angry, so mad, so vile, so dangerous that they were banned from airwaves, arenas and countires.

They had songs about killing people, killing cops, killing women, and lots and lots of sex.

If white America had been scared by Public Enemy, N.W.A. dead set terrified them, not only because that they represented everything that they were scared about of Black America, but more so that their teenage kids bought all of their albums.

NWA ended up breaking up, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre went on to have very succesful solo careers, and Eazy-E famously died of AIDS in the early nineties, MC Ren is still an underground solo artist and Yella directs porno.

All I can tell you is that 50c has nothing on NWA, in fact Snoop, Eminem and 50c would have ZERO careers what so ever if not for NWA. They were one of the most important hip hop bands of all time.

Their single “Fuck Tha Police” caused a storm of controversy in Australia when the ABC, who had been playing the song for ages, banned it. JJJ went on strike and I remember that they played NWA’s “Express yourself” non stop for 24 hours, no DJ’s no nothing. It was cool.

I will never forget how scared I was the first time I heard NWA, I was scared and excited and worried that I’d get in trouble for listening to such music, but I couldn’t stop rewinding the tape and listening again – I remember exactly where I was, in the back of a bus traveling from Methven up to Mt Hutt on the Year Ten ski trip in 1989. So thanks to Andrew Baker’s big brother for making him the tape, so we could sit back there and giggle.

So here, for your viewing pleasure, is the video that scared the living shit out of conservative America in 1988.
Ice Cube was about nineteen when this was made.

This album remains still, one of the best, angriest, outspoken and volatile albums you’ll ever hear.
Why did bands stop having a spine to say what they wanted?

Once again, there’s lots and lots of swearing so don’t watch it at all in fact.

Give a girl a break..

I read today that Kelly Cavuoto went for a TV show in London aimed at getting a new Maria for West Side Story.
She auditioned in front of Andrew Lloyd Webber and didn’t make it.

Some newspapers wrote it up saying “failed again” and “Disgraced Idol fails”.

Everyone deserves a second chance.
Nature allows us to make mistakes so that we can learn from them, that’s how we’ve evolved as a species.
This girl made a mistake, three years ago, and no doubt she’s learned her lesson over and over again.

For someone to sit behind their keypad in the safety of their office and their salary and write shit about her is very easy to do.

The girl is making an incredible effort!
She’s living in London, and she’s auditioning for Andrew Lloyd Webber for God’s sake.
This girl is playing the game, she’s on the field, she’s taking the tackles and runnning with the ball when she gets it.
The papers are the cranky old guys in the stands who can’t run anymore yelling abuse at her.

She’s putting herself out there. She’s committing to a future, doing the hard yards, and putting herself up for rejection or acceptance again.

Would the person writing this stuff about her about her be that brave?
I doubt it.

Interviewing.

It’s my job.
I interview people.
I like to watch others do it, too.
Here’s a great chat between two men who are both amazing in their own right.
On the left, Henry Rollins, writer, talker, singer, actor.
On the right, Ozzy Osbourne, Dad, singer, Prince of Darkness.
It’s tops, and will make you want to go and listen to Master of Reality.
